Is the term consentual non censentual over used?
Every time I read a post I see this term its been used in every form of interaction in ALT lately, You looked at me that was non concentual,you said something to me thats non consentual. Am I the only one that sees this as over use as a term I thought was used in the BDSM relationships such as play? If we look at life most of the unpleasant things we dont ask for or like is non consentual. Hey I didnt consent to my co workers telling my boss ____ and now I am fired. Hey I didnt consent to breaking my leg,or my friend disagreeing with me strongly. I didnt consent to that car accident or my s/o cheating on me. The list is endless on the things we dont consent to..We meaning the population at large.
I welcome opinions.

i don't think consentual, as a word or concept, is overused when used correctly. It is a basic precept for our community and we all need reminders of that.
However some of the examples you gave are simply people mis-using the language or sometimes its a joke. Misuse: "you said something that is non consentual". No one has to consent to you saying anthing unless you are in a situation like having to raise your hand to speak in class. No one has to compy or agree with what you say, but you can speak your mind.
Generally when someone speaks of being injured as non-consentual its a joke...a play on the idea we deliberately do pain causing activities that we consent to and here we have been hurt by accident without giving consent. Darn!!!
The biggest concern about consent i have is when we are not informed of a particular situation or risk, i.e. "my s/o cheating on me". It is cheating BECAUSE you were not given the information to make a choice - to consent or disagree (and bow out of the relationship). We cannot and do not consent if we are not informed. Unfortunately often informing another of a fact or even a wish requires emotional bravery, much lacking in society it seems.

ty for the comments I was being a little over the top in my examples..my apologies but it seems every where I look this term is being used from everything from snow cones to head games to conversations.
I may not be that new now but clarity on terms and definitions I have found can be very important. This came up in a play at a members home. Ones definition may not be the same as another and either physical and or emotional harm could be a result. What I felt was consentual turned non consentual due to a difference in understanding of the termanology.

Perhaps the strongest source of your frustration is not with overuse, but with misuse.
The meaning and importance of consent from one situation to the next can be easily misconstrued if the meaning and importance of other factors such as risk, personal responsibility, and prudence are also misconstrued or ignored.

Consent....Consentual....Non Consentual Weather they be overused, underused, misconstrued, or misconbobulated. Should one not first ask if any of these terms are even politically correct. . . . . . . Oh and to answer your question, I think the word is to often used as a shield to protect the weak, shy, arrogant, and pretenders. It is a necessary word, but yes, I feel it is vastly overused. | ||
